Rhode Island up next for Delaware football

8:22 a.m., Sept. 22, 2006--Hoping to rebound from a tough loss, the University of Delaware football team will open its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with a game at the University of Rhode Island at noon, Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens are 1-1 after losing 17-10 to the State University of New York at Albany last weekend before more than 22,000 disappointed fans at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium. What’s more, the Hens will be without outstanding sophomore defensive end Matt Marcorelle, who is lost for the season due to a shoulder separation suffered in the loss.

Rhode Island, which is coming off a bye week, is 1-1 with a 52-7 loss to the University of Connecticut and a 42-7 victory over Merrimack College. The Rams are led by quarterback Derek Cassidy, who has completed 12 of 27 passes for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns and has carried 21 times for 131 yards and a touchdown.

The Hens are hoping to get their offense untracked behind the leadership of quarterback Joe Flacco, who has completed 27 of 53 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Omar Cuff is UD’s top rusher and receiver, having run the ball 36 times for 149 yards and a touchdown and having caught eight passes for 94 yards.

Despite the loss to Albany, UD remains in the national rankings. The Hens are ranked No. 18 in the Sports Network poll and No. 20 in the College Sports Network poll.

Saturday’s game will be broadcast on UD flagship station WRDX-FM The River at 94.7 on the dial and on WVUD-FM, the student radio station on campus, at 91.3.
