Blue Hen football team falls 17-10 to Albany

UD running back Omar Cuff carries the ball against Albany.

11:03 a.m., Sept. 18, 2006--An error-prone University of Delaware football team fell 17-10 to the State University of New York at Albany on Saturday night before 22,016 fans at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium. UD quarterback Joe Flacco was sacked four times and intercepted twice, and the Fightin' Blue Hens amassed just 270 total yards of offense.

“We made so many mistakes tonight,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler, who lost a home game for just the fifth time in his five seasons at the helm of the Hens, said. “We just were not ready to play and that is as much the coaching staff's fault as the players. Our immaturity showed, and we did some things that are not typical of Delaware football. Our psyche is bruised for sure. And things are going to get tougher as we head to the road next week to start conference play (at Rhode Island).”

The Hens (1-1) will travel to Rhode Island for their first Atlantic 10 Conference game of the season, with kickoff at noon, Saturday, Sept. 23. Rhode Island is 1-1, with a 52-7 loss to Connecticut and a 42-7 victory over Merrimack.

In Saturday's loss to Albany, Flacco hit on 18 of 35 passes for 177 yards while junior All-America running back Omar Cuff rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown and caught six passes for 77 yards. He went over the 2,000-yard rushing mark for his career in the third quarter, becoming just the 15th UD player to reach that milestone.

Albany never trailed, putting the Hens on their heels early and taking a 17-3 lead into the half. UD managed to score its only touchdown in the third quarter when Cuff capped a 17-play, 87-yard drive with a one-yard dive with 4:15 left. The Hens drove to the Albany 19-yard line in the final minutes as Flacco hooked up with Cuff three times for 48 yards but the Great Danes ended the threat when Flacco was intercepted in the end zone.
