Blue Hen football team prepares to meet WCU
10:28 a.m., Sept. 6, 2006--Transfer quarterback Joe Flacco and junior All-America running back Omar Cuff will lead the University of Delaware football team as it opens the 2006 season with a game against West Chester University at 7 p.m., Saturday, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium. As of Wednesday, just 200 tickets remained for the game and officials were expecting UD's 12-game sellout streak to continue. Head Coach K.C. Keeler and the Fightin' Blue Hens are hoping to build on the momentum gained late in the 2005 season, when the team turned around what had been a disappointing campaign with consecutive wins over the College of William & Mary and Villanova University to finish 6-5. Cuff, who has been named to the Walter Payton Award watch list as one of the premier offensive players in NCAA Division I-AA, returns for his junior season after gaining 1,205 rushing yards last season. He had a career-high 236 yards in a victory over James Madison University. Flacco was named the starting quarterback after a months-long battle with senior Ryan Carty, who will serve alongside Kyle Campbell and KeiAndre Hepburn as UD captains this season. Flacco, who joined the Hens from the University of Pittsburgh, will have a variety of targets, including young wide receivers Aaron Love and Kervin Michaud and tight ends Robbie Agnone and Ben Patrick. On defense, the Hens feature defensive end Matt Marcorelle and a veteran group of defensive backs that includes seniors Roger Brown, Rashaad Woodard and Campbell, a four-year starter. West Chester is 0-1 after a 28-14 loss to Edinboro State University in their opener on Saturday. The Golden Rams, coached by former Hen quarterback Bill Zwaan, were led by sophomore Michael Washington, who caught nine passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Throwing to the wide receiver were quarterbacks, Matt Burdalski and Bill Zwaan, son of the coach. Last year, the Hens defeated West Chester 42-21, piling up 452 total yards. UD enters the game ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division I-AA in the most recent Sports Network poll. |
