Celebrate ’Family Fun Night’ Sept. 25

4:33 p.m., Sept. 19, 2006--The University/Schools Alliance (USA), a partnership of UD, high schools and state and community agencies, will host “Family Fun Night” from 5-9 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, at several area Friendly's restaurants. The event is in celebration of Family Day, a national initiative that emphasizes the importance of regular family activities in parent-child communications and encourages Americans to make family dinners a regular feature of their lives. The participating Friendly's restaurants are at People's Plaza on South College Avenue, Elkton Road and Kirkwood Highway and in Rehoboth Beach.

Since 1998, research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has consistently found that children and teenagers who eat dinner with their families are less likely to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs. Data from Delaware Youth Risk Behavior surveys support these findings. In 2001, CASA launched Family Day, and with the support of Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, USA has celebrated Family Day in Delaware since 2003.

On Family Day 2005, more than 1.3 million Americans pledged to have dinner with their family on Family Day.
