Grad school fair slated for Oct. 6

3:01 p.m., Sept. 20, 2006--UD will host a graduate school fair in conjunction with the fourth annual National McNair Scholars Research Conference being held on campus from Oct. 6-7.

Representatives of graduate schools from across the country will be on hand to speak with prospective students from 4-6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 6. UD students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend the fair, free of charge. It will be held in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant University Center.

In addition to UD, participating schools include Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Temple and Ohio State universities as well as the universities of Wisconsin, California and Virginia. To see a complete list of graduate schools that will be represented at the fair, visit [www.udel.edu/mcnairconference/fair.html].

The McNair Scholars Research Conference will focus on developing excellence in academia and beyond. This is the fourth year UD's Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program has hosted the national conference. It offers an opportunity for student scholars to experience a simulated professional research conference, as well as a chance to network with scholars and faculty from across the country.

Named for Ronald E. McNair, an African-American astronaut who died in the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle in 1986, the UD program helps students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds get into graduate programs of their choice and obtain funding. The University Undergraduate Scholars program is modeled on the McNair program.

Modeled on the professional academic meeting style, all oral presenters will have an opportunity to discuss their research as a member of a panel, a selected group of students who serve as experts on their area of research.

Additional cultural events and entertainment that capitalize on rich regional cultural assets are being planned.

For more information about the conference, visit [http://www.udel.edu/mcnairconference/index.html], contact Ruth Hurst at (302) 831-8837 or send e-mail to [rhurst@udel.edu]. For more information about the McNair Scholars Program, call (302) 831-4396.
