4 UD Marching Band members to perform on ESPN

UD’s Chris Leone performs with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps during the 2006 world championships.

10:34 a.m., Sept. 5, 2006--Four members of the UD Marching Band who also participate as members of nationally renowned drum corps will be seen on ESPN2 at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Drum Corps International's 2006 World Championship held Aug. 10-12 in Madison, Wis.

Chris Leone, a senior business major from Midlothian, Va.; Chris Lennox, a sophomore music major from Bear; Ed Brainard, a senior economics major from Wilmington, and Wayne Gibson, a senior engineering major from Port Republic, Md., performed in the competition.

Leone marched top bass drum for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps that won the world championship and gold medal, Lennox marched bass four for the Phantom Regiment that finished second and captured the first-place high percussion award. Brainard marched bass five for the Madison Scouts, and Gibson played in the front ensemble for the Bluecoats. The Bluecoats and Madison Scouts finished fourth and ninth, respectively, from a starting field of 23 corps.

The Cavaliers are located in Rosemont, Ill., the Phantom Regiment in Rockford, Ill., Bluecoats in Canton, Ohio, and the Madison Scouts in Wisconsin.

Leone, Lennox, Brainard and Gibson auditioned for each drum and bugle corps in December and November then attended rehearsals once a month until June when they remained with the bands touring and competing.
