Graduate engineering at UD ranked No. 11 nationally
11:40 a.m., Sept. 26, 2006--The University of Delaware has one of the nation's top 20 graduate engineering programs, according to rankings announced last week by The Princeton Review. The UD graduate engineering program was ranked No. 11, with the list headed by the University of California Santa Barbara and followed in the top 10 by Duke University, the University of Virginia, Michigan State University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland at College Park, Rice University, the University of Texas at Austin, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Notre Dame. Following UD in the top 20 were Lehigh University, Washington University, the University of New Mexico, Ohio State University, the University of California San Diego, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Toledo, Dartmouth College and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. This was the first-ever ranking of the nation's top graduate engineering programs by The Princeton Review, which provides college and graduate school guides and admission test services. "I am pleased and gratified that The Princeton Review, which is a highly valued resource for students and their advisers, has recognized the high quality of our engineering programs,” Eric Kaler, Elizabeth Inez Kelley Professor of Chemical Engineering and dean of the College of Engineering, said. "This high ranking reflects years of good work by the faculty, who have built a tremendously strong research college while maintaining a strong focus on high quality undergraduate education,” Kaler said. “In fact, many of our undergraduate students are directly involved in our research projects." The College of Engineering offers graduate programs in chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering and ocean engineering. Robert Franek, vice president and senior editor of Princeton Review books, said the organization designed the graduate engineering programs rankings “as a substantive resource for students who apply to graduate programs of engineering each year and for all who advise and support them, from college and career counselors to educators and parents. Each school on our list of top programs of graduate engineering should be recognized for the quality education they provide for those planning a career in this field.” In an effort to help inform students about quality graduate engineering programs, The Princeton Review said it collected and validated institutional and program specific data over the past two academic years. The engineering education programs were then ranked using a combination of quantitative criteria, including Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, undergraduate grade point averages, percentage of applicants accepted and percentage of top undergraduates applying.
