Diversity in leadership series set October through November

1:51 p.m., Sept. 28, 2006--UD Student Centers is sponsoring a series of Diversity in Leadership workshops, “Walk a mile in my shoes,” in October and November. All workshops will be held in the Trabant University Center.

The series of five workshops will focus on various aspects of diversity in relation to leadership development. The series is intended to teach how awareness and respect of diversity will assist students in their effectiveness as leaders in their student organizations, campus community and professional pursuits.

October workshops include:

  • 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, Trabant Theater: “So What's Up with All This Diversity Stuff?” Facilitated by Zakia Reaves, a complex coordinator for Residence Life, this session will give students an understanding of why diversity awareness is important to all members of the University community and how they can intentionally and strategically incorporate diversity awareness and appreciation into their organizations;
  • 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24, Multipurpose Room B: “The Challenges of Life with a Disability.” Lead by Tim Brooks of the Center for Disability Studies, participants will discuss the difficulties of everyday life for a person with severe disabilities. The audience also will participate in a quiz on disability issues; and
  • 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 30, Multipurpose Room B: “ What Color is Your Star.” Leigh Fine of Residence Life will teach audience members about the color of their stars and its importance in their lives. Participants also will learn about others' stars and their experiences, which will foster conversation about diversity and build understanding.

November workshops include:

  • 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9, Multipurpose Room C: “What's Race Have to Do with Me: Race in the 21st Century.” Maggie Ussery, assistant professor of Black American Studies, will examine the changing nature of race relations and racial definitions in the new century; and
  • 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, Multipurpose Room B: ”Leading Without Boundaries: Exploring the Potential.” Lulu Kaliher, complex coordinator of Residence Life, will explore the spectrum of leadership, understanding how to be an inclusive leader and how to help one's group be successful, especially in regards to diversity.

The series is free and open to all students. Students who attend at least three workshops will receive certification and recognition at the
annual Leadership Awards Ceremony held in May.
