3:06 p.m., Sept. 18, 2006--Newark Community Day, held Sunday, Sept. 17, was a big success and a great opportunity for students and Newark residents to get together, have fun and learn about each other, according to Joe Spadafino, Newark recreation superintendent. Sharon Bruen, event coordinator for the city, organized Newark Community Day.

Approximately 8,000 to 10,000 persons from the UD and the Newark communities attended the daylong festivities, Spadafino said. “The weather was great, and there was a family atmosphere with everyone having a good time. The community groups did a wonderful job, not only providing information, but offering activities for children.”

Students from UD's Department of Nursing were on hand to check blood pressure, and vendors offered a large variety of foods to enjoy. Participants could watch karate, cheerleading, dancing and jazzercize demonstrations on stage. Many participants opted to make and take home scarecrows to celebrate fall. Musical groups, with a finale by the Newark Community Band, also contributed to the day's festivities, as did UD's popular Blue Hen mascot, YoUDee.
