Celebrate Newark Community Day on Sunday

11:49 a.m., Sept. 15, 2006--Everyone is invited to Newark Community Day for fun, food and festivities, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 17. The city's premier fall festival, now in its third decade, will be held on The Green, north from Memorial Hall, and along Main Street, to Tyre Avenue, including the Academy Building lawn and the Newark Shopping Center.

Newark Community Day, which coincides with Freshman Family Weekend at UD, offers live entertainment and demonstrations, activities for all ages, arts and crafts, dining and retail specials on Main Street, a collectibles and antique bazaar, a food court area, opportunities to learn about the Newark community and much more.

Community organizations with displays and handouts will be on hand on The Green to answer questions, and the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company is inviting visitors.

Entertainment, music and demonstrations will take place on three stages. There will be family-oriented games and activities for children for free or for little cost on The Green and a sidewalk chalk festival on Main Street. Shoppers can visit Main Street stores, arts and crafts vendors and the bazaar area with collectibles and antiques for sale behind Sypherd Hall.

Make Your Own Scarecrow is a popular family event where, for $5 per scarecrow, participants can choose from mounds of clothing and scrap materials, create and stuff their own scarecrow and take it home in time for Halloween.

Mini-moto bike racing at the Newark Shopping Center is another favorite.

Parking will be free in municipal parking lots, and several UD lots will be open free of charge. Fees apply to the Visitor Center Lot, some Academy Street lots and the Student Center Parking Garage. East Delaware Avenue will be closed from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. for Newark Community Day.

For information, lost and found items or lost children, go to the information booth on The Green off Delaware Avenue or to the ticket booth at the children's area on The Green.

Newark Community Day partners include the city of Newark, the University of Delaware, Christina School District and the Downtown Newark Partnership. Sponsors include the DaimlerChrysler Newark Assembly Plant, Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials, Delaware Chiropractic and Citizens Bank.

For more information, call the Newark Parks and Recreation Department at (302) 366-7060.

Editor's note: Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 24. In case of inclement weather, postponement announcements will be made on WDEL (1150 AM) and WSTW (93.7 FM) by 6:30 a.m. or call (302) 366-7147 for cancellation information.
