Newark Police report string of burglaries

6:40 p.m., Sept. 20, 2006--Since the end of August, the Newark Police Department has been investigating a string of burglaries that have been centered in the areas of North Chapel Street, Choate Street, New Street, East Cleveland Avenue between North College Avenue and North Chapel Street, and Wilbur and Kershaw streets.

Police said the burglaries are occurring in the late night and early morning hours, when the suspects have been entering residences through unlocked windows and doors. Police recommend that residents protect themselves against being victimized by following these guidelines:

  • Secure all windows and doors, because several burglaries happened while the residents were home and left doors and windows open or left for just a short period of time.
  • Do not allow anyone into the residence that you do not know personally, including those strangers who might arrive during a party.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and get to know the other members of your community.
  • Report any and all activity that appears suspicious in nature immediately to the Newark Police at 911 or the non-emergency number, 366-7111.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to contact Det. Jay Conover of the Newark Police at 366-7110, ext. 132.
