ELC wins Governor’s Award of Excellence

3:18 p.m., Sept. 29, 2006--UD's Early Learning Center (ELC) received the Delaware Governor's Award for Excellence in Early Care and Education at an awards ceremony Thursday, Sept. 28, in Dover. ELC won second place for excellence as an early learning childcare facility in New Castle County in its second year of operation.

Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner announced the winners of the eighth annual Governor's Awards for Excellence in Early Care and Education, honoring exceptional early care providers for positively reinforcing the lives of children in their care.

Tied for first place in the early learning facility category were BayHealth Child Care Center, Dover and Delaware Technical & Community College Child Care Center, Wilmington Campus.

Karen Rucker, director of ELC, accepted the award. She said ELC is honored to have been selected. “To achieve this public recognition after only two years of operation is a demonstration of how genuinely committed our amazing team of teachers and classroom assistants are to providing quality services for children and their families,” Rucker said. “I feel fortunate to work with them every day.”

Other categories include family childcare provider and teacher from a childcare center or preschool, and three ELC staff members were nominated: Barbara Clayton, Susan Yetman and Eileen Blouse.

Governor's Award winners receive a certificate signed by the governor and a cash award.

The nomination process begins in April of each year. Those chosen must demonstrate excellence in applying knowledge of how children develop and learn; developing and implementing curriculum; assessing children's development and learning and using the information to improve curriculum and programs; building relationships with families and in professional development and professional behavior.

The Women and the Law Section of the Delaware State Bar Association created the awards in 1999 to publicly recognize and thank early care educators who provide working women with services that allow them to do their jobs.

Earlier this year, ELC received national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
