Grad wins Phi Kappa Phi Award of Excellence

Phoebe Holmes, AS ‘06

3:43 p.m., Sept. 6, 2006--Phoebe Holmes, of Oxford, Pa., a May graduate of UD's biological sciences and women studies programs, has been awarded an Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi 2006 Award of Excellence. The $2,000 award is given to only 40 Phi Kappa Phi members nationwide.

“I was extremely excited and honored to have received this award. I am in great company among all the winners, and I am very pleased to have assistance in pursuing my dream,” she said.

The annual award is for members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Holmes, a first year student at Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, was selected by the UD chapter to compete for the award.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and largest honor society, inducting approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni each year. Since its founding in 1897, more than 1 million members have been initiated.

The Society's mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

Some of the organization's more notable members include former President Jimmy Carter, writer John Grisham, NASA astronaut Wendy Lawrence and Netscape founder James Barksdale.
