Newark Police charge five in fight, assault

1:51 p.m., Sept. 25, 2006--Two employees of Pizza University in the Newark Shopping Center were assaulted, and one injured, when they attempted to break up a fight in front of the restaurant in the early morning hours Sunday, according to Newark Police, who said five people have been charged in the incident.

Police said the fight broke out in front of Pizza University shortly after midnight when two restaurant employees, one 43 and the other 23, attempted to break it up. They were then assaulted by several of the persons involved in the fight, two of the combatants holding the older of the two employees while a suspect identified as Travis R. Jackson, 18, of the 100 block of Stamm Boulevard in New Castle, hit him in the back with a pole from a table umbrella.

When the younger employee tried to intervene, police said he was challenged by Jackson, who produced a knife.

The employees returned to the store and called police while the defendants fled on foot to North Chapel Street, where they were taken into custody within minutes by responding officers.

Police said Jackson was charged with assault in the second degree, aggravated menacing, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony and resisting arrest. He was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility after failing to post $9,500 bail.

The remaining defendants were each charged with assault in the third degree and released pending a future court appearance. They were identified as: Alfred M. Subach, 19, of the unit block of Booker Circle, New Castle; and Justin R. Subach, 18, also of the unit block of Booker Circle, New Castle. Police also charged a 16-year-old male from Elsmere and a 17-year-old male from Bear.

The restaurant employee who was injured in the scuffle suffered abrasions on his back and a laceration under his left eye. He refused medical attention at the scene. The second employee was not injured.
