Blue Hen Weekend: Volleyball, cross country

1:54 p.m., Oct. 26, 2006--Two important Colonial Athletic Association volleyball matches and the conference cross country championships, as well as a home football game, will dominate action at the University of Delaware this weekend.

The Fightin' Blue Hens volleyball team, which is battling for a CAA postseason championship tournament berth, will take on Hofstra University at 7 p.m., Friday, at Barbara Viera Court at the Carpenter Sports Building. The Hens will remain at home for another key match against Northeastern University at 7 p.m., Saturday.

Hofstra leads the CAA with a record of 16-5 overall and 12-0 in the conference, and Northeastern is in a tie for third place at 11-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference. UD is 16-6 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

UD will serve as host to the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association cross country championships, which will be held Friday morning at White Clay Creek State Park off Route 896 just north of Newark. The women's race will begin at 10 a.m., with the men's race at 11 and the awards ceremony at noon.

The College of William & Mary has dominated both the men's and the women's championships in recent years, the men's team having won every title since 2000 and the women's team having won every title since 2003.

In football, UD will face Towson University at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium. The Hens are 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The UD field hockey team will play a non-conference game at 1 p.m., Sunday at Rullo Stadium, facing LaSalle University. The Hens will travel to face Drexel University in a CAA contest at 4 p.m., Friday.

Traveling this weekend, the UD women's soccer team will play at Drexel at 7 p.m., Friday, the swimming teams will compete in a dual meet at Georgetown University at 1 p.m., Saturday, and the women's rowing team will compete at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday and the Princeton Chase on Sunday.
