Blue Hen Weekend: Soccer, swimming set

Sobhan Tadjalli and the Hens are battling for a CAA tournament berth.

11:04 a.m., Oct. 19, 2006--University of Delaware varsity athletics has a light schedule at home, with a pair of soccer matches at the Delaware Mini-Stadium and the opening swim meet of the season at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin' Blue Hens women's soccer team will take the field at 7 p.m., Friday, against Northeastern University in a Colonial Athletic Association match. The Hens will then travel to Hofstra University for a second conference match on Sunday afternoon.

UD is 8-6-2 overall and 3-6 in the conference, where the Hens are currently in a three-way tie for seventh place as they battle for a tournament berth. Senior forward Lindsay Boyd is among the conference leaders in goals, with six, while freshman forward Melissa Kilker is among the leaders in assists, with five. UD senior goalkeeper Bonnie Mills is second in the CAA with 83 saves.

On Sunday, the men's soccer team will face Hofstra in a conference match at 2 p.m. That will follow a game at Northeastern University on Friday night.

UD is 5-6-2 overall and 3-5 in the conference, where it is hoping to earn a spot in the six-team postseason championship tournament for the first time. The Hens are currently in ninth place with three conference games remaining. UD junior forward Sobhan Tadjalli is among the conference leaders with eight goals and four assists for 20 total points through 13 matches.

The UD swimming and diving teams will open their 2006-07 season with a dual meet against George Mason University at 1 p.m., Saturday.

Traveling this weekend will be the field hockey team, which will play at Towson University at 7 p.m., Friday, and at James Madison University at 1 p.m., Sunday, and the volleyball team, which will visit Towson at 7:30 p.m., Friday.

The UD field hockey team, which was off last weekend, is 6-8 overall and 3-2 in the CAA, where they are fighting for a championship tournament berth. UD senior midfielder Katie Evans is among the conference points leaders, with six goals and seven assists, while fellow senior Stephanie Swain is among the assists leaders with five. Junior goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades, filling in for the injured Megan Allen, is among the leaders in saves with 81.

The 15-5 UD volleyball team is one of six CAA teams ranked regionally, with the Hens 10th in the East. Hofstra is No. 3, followed by Towson at No. 6, UD at No. 10, James Madison at No. 13 and Virginia Commonwealth at No. 14. Also, Northeastern is ranked No. 14 in the Northeast region. Individually, UD setter Megan Welch is ranked ninth in NCAA Division I with 13.26 assists per game while Colleen Walsh is 26th with 4.74 kills per game.

The rowing team will compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston and tennis teams will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament, with the men at the University of Pennsylvania and the women at Dartmouth College.

The football team will play at the University of Richmond in a key Atlantic 10 Conference game at 6 p.m., Saturday. The game will be televised on Comcast CN8.
