Blue Hen Weekend: Hoopla and football

8:50 a.m., Oct. 12, 2006--Blue Hen Weekend will kick off on Friday with a celebration of the fast-approaching 2006-07 basketball season when the men's and women's teams take the floor at the Bob Carpenter Center for Hens Hoopla.

The special event, which is free and open to all Fightin' Blue Hens fans and students, will run from 6:30-8 p.m. Hens Hoopla is sponsored by the Cockpit, a UD student organization dedicated to supporting varsity athletics.

Basketball coaches Monté Ross and Tina Martin will lead their teams through intra-squad scrimmages, and team members will be introduced by Mike Corey of WRDX-FM The River 94.7, the voice of Blue Hen basketball. The evening will also include the finals of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Wing War sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings, contests, giveaways, and appearances by the cheerleaders, dance team and YoUDee. Also Friday, the UD men's soccer team will play a Colonial Athletic Association match against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m. at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Hens will return to action with a home CAA match against Georgia State University at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Homecoming football game will be played at noon, Saturday, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium, with the Hens taking on Hofstra University. Both teams are 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Also Saturday, the UD cross country teams will compete in the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park. The men's race will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the women's race at 11:15.

Several UD teams will be traveling this weekend, with the women's soccer team at UNC Wilmington on Friday and at Georgia State on Sunday. The volleyball team will be at James Madison University on Friday and at George Mason University on Saturday. The tennis teams will compete in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News from Friday-Sunday
