Blue Hens rally, defeat Towson in volleyball

Colleen Walsh is ninth all-time in kills for the UD volleyball program.

9:45 a.m., Oct. 23, 2006--After falling behind 2-0, the University of Delaware volleyball team rallied for an important 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over host Towson University on Friday night.

The victory was a big lift for the Fightin' Blue Hens, who are battling for a CAA playoff tournament berth. The Hens are now 16-5 overall and 7-5 in the conference, good for fifth place with six conference matches yet to play.

After a non-conference match against Villanova University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building, the Hens will remain at home for a pair of CAA weekend games. UD will face Hofstra University at 7 p.m., Friday, and Northeastern University at 7 p.m., Saturday. Hofstra leads the conference and Northeastern is in third place.

In the victory over Towson, the Hens lost 30-27 and 30-22 before regrouping to win 30-28, 30-28 and 15-8. It was UD's first victory over Towson since 2001.

Kelly Gibson had 20 kills and 29 digs for the Hens, while Colleen Walsh had 18 kills to move her into ninth place all-time at UD. Freshman Michelle LaLonde had 13 kills and six blocks and setter Megan Welch had 56 assists.
