Blue Hen volleyball loses two CAA matches

Sophomore Kelly Gibson had 21 kills in the loss to Virginia Commonwealth.

9:27 a.m., Oct. 9, 2006--The University of Delaware volleyball team lost a pair of Colonial Athletic Association matches on the road this weekend, falling 3-2 at Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday and 3-1 at the College of William & Mary on Saturday.

With the losses, the Fightin' Blue Hens are now 14-4 overall and 5-4 in the CAA. They will remain on the road for conference matches at James Madison University on Friday and at George Mason University on Saturday.

The Hens fell 30-17 and 30-26 in the first two games to Virginia Commonwealth before bouncing back to tie the match with 30-25 and 30-26 victories. However, Virginia Commonwealth won the tiebreaker 10-5 for the victory. Sophomore Kelly Gibson had 21 kills and 15 digs and junior Colleen Walsh had 16 kills. Megan Welch had 55 assists and Heather Ranck had 29 digs.

Against William & Mary, the Hens lost 30-24, 28-30, 30-28 and 30-22. Gibson had 16 kills and 28 digs, a career high, while Welch had 61 assists and Ranck had 29 digs. Freshman Michelle LaLonde had 14 kills and four blocks.
