Delaware volleyball digs deep, downs Northeastern

Megan Welch helped lead the Hens to a comeback victory over Northeastern.

10:27 a.m., Oct. 30, 2006--After falling behind 2-0, the University of Delaware volleyball team battled back to defeat Northeastern University 3-2 in a Colonial Athletic Association match played Saturday at Barbara Viera Court at the Carpenter Sports Building. The victory followed a 3-2 home loss to Hofstra University, the conference leader, on Friday.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 17-7 overall and 8-6 and in fifth place in the CAA with four matches remaining. UD will travel for conference contests at Georgia State University on Friday and at the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Sunday. The Hens will return home for season-ending matches against the College of William & Mary on Nov. 10 and Virginia Commonwealth University on Nov. 11.

In Saturday's victory over Northeastern, UD fell behind early, losing 30-26 and 30-25 in the first two games. However, the Hens regrouped and won 30-27, 30-24 and 15-9. Junior hitter Colleen Walsh had 26 kills, her third highest total of the season, and sophomore Kelly Gibson had 22 kills and 24 digs. Junior setter Megan Welch had 62 assists, the sixth time this season she has had 60 or more assists.

Gibson had 21 kills and 17 digs in the loss to Hofstra, while Walsh had 14 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde had 12 kills and two blocks. Freshman hitter Kelly Matthias had 10 kills and five blocks and Welch had 57 assists.
