14-1 UD volleyball team hosts Towson Tuesday

10:56 a.m., Oct. 2, 2006--The red-hot University of Delaware volleyball team earned two more Colonial Athletic Association victories this weekend, improving to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

The Fightin' Blue Hens defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 3-0 on Friday and Georgia State University 3-1 on Saturday, with both contests played at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

UD will remain at home for an important CAA match against perennial power Towson University at 7 p.m., Tuesday. Towson, which reached the conference championship game last season, is 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. This weekend, the Tigers defeated UNC Wilmington 3-0 and Georgia State 3-2.

In the victory over UNC Wilmington, the Hens won 30-11, 30-21 and 30-26. Junior Colleen Walsh had 16 kills, sophomore Kelly Gibson had 13 kills and junior setter Megan Welch had 43 assists. Heather Ranck led the team with 11 digs and had five service aces.

Against Georgia State, Gibson had 14 kills and 17 digs, Walsh had 16 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde had 12 kills on 18 attack attempts and no errors. Ranck had 22 digs and seven service aces, a career high, and Welch had 46 assists.
