William & Mary captures CAA cross country titles

3:30 p.m., Oct. 27, 2006--The College of William & Mary swept the Colonial Athletic Association team championships on Friday morning at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, with the men's team winning its seventh straight title and the women's team its fourth straight. C.W. Moran of James Madison University won the individual men's title, and teammate Dena Spickard won the individual women's title.

The University of Delaware women's team, led by 10th-place finisher Julia Somers, finished fourth in the team standings for the second consecutive year. The UD men's team, led by senior Kyle Schmid in 20th place, finished in seventh place. The Fightin' Blue Hens served as hosts of a conference championship meet for the first time since 2000, when UD was a member of the America East Conference.

The UD women's team had three runners in the top 30 as Somers, a sophomore, finished 10th in a time of 22:31.59, freshman Christina finished 20th in 23:04.20, and sophomore Brooke Maguire finished 26th in 23:28.87. Junior Colleen O'Brien, who finished third at the CAA meet each of the last two seasons but has battled injuries throughout the fall, finished 57th in 24:44.60.

For the UD men's team, Schmid finished in 20th place in 25:57, sophomore Gregg Cantwell finished 36th in 26:33.87, freshman Nick Pyle finished 48th in 26:56.10, freshman Chris Bourke finished 49th in 27:00.33, and junior Mike Zeberkiewicz finished 50th in 27:03.69.

The women's race was run over a six-kilometer course and the men's race over an eight-kilometer course.
