UD swim teams sweep dual meet at Georgetown

UD’s Garrett Arant won three events against Georgetown.

10:20 a.m., Oct. 30, 2006--Garrett Arant, Grady Carter andMaryann Walker won three events each as the University of Delaware swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet from host Georgetown University on Saturday afternoon.

The UD men's team, off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2000-01 season, defeated Georgetown by a score of 149-75 while the women's team, also 2-0, defeated the Hoyas 150-88.

Arant won the 1,000 freestyle (10:03.29), 400 individual medley (4:19.22) and 500 freestyle (4:54.99) while Carter won the 50 freestyle (21.50), 100 freestyle (47.87) and 400 medley relay (3:37.17). Carter's time in the 50 freestyle was the seventh fastest in UD history.

Diver Matt Abbruzzese captured the one-meter (262.20 points) and three-meter (233.78) diving events for the second straight meet. Other winners for the Fightin' Blue Hens were Ryan Carolan in the 200 butterfly and Adam Blomberg in the 200 freestyle.

Walker, who won two events in last week's season-opening win over George Mason University, had three first place finishes against Georgetown as she captured the 100 freestyle (54.29), 200 freestyle (1:58.25) and 400 medley relay (4:01.23). Emily Smathers won the 200 backstroke (2:12.11) and was a member of the winning 400 medley relay team.

Other winners for the UD women's team were Sarah Bergan in the three-meter dive, Cecily Connell in the 500 freestyle, Kailey Pelton in the 200 butterfly, Rachel Greene in the 50 freestyle and Meredith Law in the 1,000 freestyle.

Both UD teams will continue action Friday and Saturday when the Hens serve as host to Old Dominion University, the College of William & Mary and Northeastern University in a Colonial Athletic Association quad meet at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.
