Police seek suspect in attempted murder

Suspect Dennis Ray Singleton

Editor's note: The suspect in this case has been apprehended in Chincoteague, Va., and is being held in Virginia on fugitive charges, Newark Police reported on Monday afternoon.

2:18 p.m., Oct. 23, 2006--Newark Police are seeking a Wilmington man following the severe beating of a woman at 8 a.m., Friday, at the Howard Johnson Inn and Suites on South College Avenue in Newark.

Police identified the suspect as Dennis Ray Singleton, 49, whose last known address was in Wilmington. He is described as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 195 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Police said the 29-year-old victim reported that she and Singleton, an acquaintance, were involved in a heated argument during which he assaulted her. She said he used several items in the hotel room during the assault, and also stomped on her as she lay on the ground. He also threatened to kill the woman.

Warrants have been obtained for Singleton charging him with attempted murder, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony and terroristic threatening, police said.

Anyone who sees or comes into contact with Singleton, should contact their local police immediately, and anyone with information on the incident should contact the Newark Police at (302) 366-7110, ext. 132, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
