Rowing team competes at Head of the Charles

UD Head Coach Laura Slice

8:19 a.m., Oct. 24, 2006--The University of Delaware women's rowing team competed in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston held Oct. 21-22.

UD's varsity eights team of Kenna Plangemann (coxswain), Elizabeth Carey, Laura Beaufort, Melanie Turner, Christina Stanley, Justine Strausser, Lisa Ferrara, Jenn Boutin and Nikki Jackowsky finished 42nd out of 46 teams with a time of 17:41.095.

The U.S. National Team posted the winning time of 15:36.733 and the Canadian National Team was runner-up in 15:54.637.

"The championship varsity eights event at the Charles is a tough event," UD Head Coach Laura Slice said. "My varsity eights has worked very hard in just a few short weeks to make improvements and changes that allowed us to increase our speed from last year. This year our varsity eights decreased our margin between our time and the first place time by over 4 percent."

The rowing team will continue the fall exhibition season by competing in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Saturday and the Princeton Case on Sunday.
