Liquor store is robbed on Saturday afternoon

3:03 p.m., Oct. 23, 2006--Newark Police are seeking a suspect in the robbery of the Newark Discount Liquors store in the Newark Shopping Center following an incident that occurred at 3:20 p.m., Saturday.

Police said the suspect is described as a man about 6 feet, 1 inch tall and about 165-175 pounds, with blonde hair in a crew cut style and facial stubble. He was wearing blue jeans and a baseball cap, and a gray coat with a hood.

When a store employee opened the cash register while serving a customer, police said the suspect reached over the counter and grabbed money from the register. He fled the store and jumped into a car in the parking lot as a store employee gave chase.

The employee broke the driver's side window of the car and attempted to remove the suspect, who was able to break the grip and drive away. The employee suffered abrasions to his arm but refused medical treatment.

The suspect was last seen driving out of the shopping center onto North Chapel Street. The car is a small older model, possibly a dark gray Toyota Tercel, with a possible Delaware license plate of 214890.

Anyone with information should call the Newark Police at (302) 366-7110, ext. 132, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
