UD football team preps for visit to Richmond

10:57 a.m., Oct. 19, 2006--The University of Delaware football team will travel to the University of Richmond, currently ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division I-AA, for an important Atlantic 10 Conference game at 6 p.m., Saturday. The game will be televised on Comcast CN8.

Richmond is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, with victories over Northeastern University and the University of Rhode Island and the lone loss to the University of New Hampshire. Coach Dave Clawson's Spiders also have a 13-0 victory over Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference to their credit.

The Richmond defense is strong, having allowed just two first-half touchdowns in six games, and is ranked in the top 10 nationally in total defense, scoring defense and pass defense. No team has amassed more than 272 yards in total offense against the Spiders.

Quarterback Eric Ward, a redshirt freshman, directs the Richmond offense. He has completed 68 of 120 passes for 825 yards and seven touchdowns. He spreads the ball around to wide receivers Arman Shields (18 catches) and Matt Hale (17), and tailback Tim Hightower (15), the team's leading rusher with 630 yards on 110 carries.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference, and are hoping to make some headway with the return of several injured players. Listed as probable for the game are junior running back Omar Cuff and wide receiver Aaron Love.

Last week, the return of defensive lineman Manny Marshall and linebacker Brian Brown provided the Hens a big lift, as they held Hofstra University to just two field goals in a 10-6 Homecoming victory.

In addition to television coverage, the game will be broadcast on radio stations WRDX-FM The River 94.7 and WVUD-FM 91.3.
