Reception marks opening of ’One on One’ exhibition
3:51 p.m., Oct. 19, 2006--About 100 guests attended a reception in Mechanical Hall during the official opening of “One on One: Image & Response,” the current art exhibition featuring selected works from the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American Art. The exhibition runs through March 23. In addition to highlighting selected works from the Paul R. Jones Collection, the exhibition, whose theme is artwork-viewer interaction, also features commentary on the works by 20 different writers who responded to what they saw. Responses to the works range from gut reactions to cooler musings that focus on historical and sociological aspects. The complete text of the responses to the exhibits, along with reproductions of the selected works, is reproduced in the exhibition booklet. “'One on One' is specifically designed to involve people who ordinarily think they don't have anything to say about art,” Amalia K. Amaki, curator of the Paul R. Jones Collection and UD professor of black American studies, said of the exhibition. “It's a really good opportunity to see that everybody can have a one-on-one relationship with a work of art. It's also an opportunity for professors from other disciplines to get into art. It breaks down the barriers and makes people appreciate art at different levels.” Mamawa Fofana, a sophomore mechanical engineering major, said the exhibition was an excellent avenue for her to enjoy art and see how observers from different disciplines see the same art.
Speaking at the reception, UD benefactor Paul R. Jones said both the participation by various academic disciplines and the well-attended reception underlined the growing influence of the collection at the University of Delaware and beyond. “One of the things that hit me when I came in here is to see the crowd that came here and to see the mix of students in attendance, and people from the community and around the campus,” Jones said. “It certainly shows that the concept that we had in mind in making the donation of art to the University was a good one, that it is working and that even better things are coming down the pike as we see the Paul Jones Initiative across campus in all departments.” Mechanical Hall gallery hours are from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Wednesdays; and from 1-4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed Mondays. For more information, call (302) 831-4075, or go to [www.udel.edu/museums]. Article by Martin Mbugua
