UD, Towson students back Special Olympics

11:08 a.m., Oct. 27, 2006--Scholar-athletes from the University of Delaware and Towson University are participating in the inaugural Pigskin Pass, a two-day football relay run to raise funds for Special Olympics programs in Delaware and Maryland.

The Pigskin Pass was developed by the Student Athlete Advisory Councils at both universities as a way for the rival institutions to compete, have fun and help a worthy cause. The councils are being supported by law enforcement agencies in both states.

The 58-mile run will begin today on the 50-yard line at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium and will conclude Saturday with the presentation of the game ball at the 50-yard line of Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium just prior to the start of the Atlantic 10 Conference football game between the Fightin' Blue Hens and the Tigers. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Towson scholar-athletes will run a relay from Towson to Aberdeen, where they will hand the football off to UD scholar-athletes, who will finish the relay Saturday morning. More than 50 Hens representing golf, soccer, lacrosse, swimming and diving, tennis, baseball, softball, rowing, cross country and track and field, are scheduled to participate.

More than $5,500 had been raised to benefit Special Olympics as of Thursday evening. Donations can be made online at [www.pigskinpass.com] or at a table on the west side of Delaware Stadium before or after the game on Saturday. Fans donating more than $58 (the distance of the run) will receive a free shirt.

The event was organized and developed by UD SAAC President Tyler Kupper and Towson SAAC President Ryan Schreite, as well as other SAAC member from the two universities.
