UD men's soccer team ends season with win

Sophomore Bill Paugh scored his first goal of the season to give the Hens the win.

10:39 a.m., Oct. 27, 2006--The University of Delaware men's soccer team concluded its best season since 2001 with a 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Drexel University on Thursday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, led by first-year Head Coach Ian Hennessy, finished the season 6-8-2 overall and 4-7 in the CAA. That is the most wins since the 2001 team went 7-11-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the America East Conference. Last season, UD won just two games and scored just nine goals. The three goals scored Thursday brought the 2006 season total to 21.

Drexel took an early 1-0 lead but the Hens responded six minutes later when junior forward Sobhan Tadjalli scored his ninth goal of the year. The goal came following a long free kick by UD goalkeeper Taylor Thames, which Tadjalli collected and found his way behind the Drexel defenders.

About midway through the first half, freshman midfielder Paul Danaher gave the Hens the lead, finishing off a one-touch pass from senior Anthony Talarico. Drexel tied the game in the second half but with just under five minutes remaining, UD's Bill Paugh scored his first goal of the season to break the deadlock and give the Hens the win as the sophomore headed home a free kick by Danaher.
