Delaware men’s soccer upsets No. 21 JMU

Anthony Talarico’s goal sent the UD-James Madison game into overtime.

10:40 a.m., Oct. 2, 2006--Continuing a revival, the University of Delaware men's soccer team upset No. 21-ranked James Madison University 3-2 in overtime in a Colonial Athletic Association match played Sunday afternoon at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens trailed 2-1 until late in the game, when Anthony Talarico scored with just 13 second remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Sobhan Tadjalli scored his second goal of the day 5:12 into overtime to give UD the win.

The Hens took the early lead on Tadjalli's first goal just under 30 minutes into the match, as he scored on a long breakaway down the right center of the field, beating James Madison goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. The Dukes responded quickly when Kyle Morsink scored just 16 seconds later, putting a loose ball past UD keeper Taylor Thames.

James Madison carried play throughout much of the second half and took the lead when Kurt Morsink drove home a shot from 15 yards out. The Dukes seemed to have the game in hand until UD's Tau Blau slipped a pass to Talarico, who beat Trapp low and to the right side with just ticks left on the clock.

Two minutes into overtime, the Hens gained a man advantage when James Madison's Ekom Etuk was issued a red card. Less than three minutes later, Anthony Pezza sent a long pass through to Tadjalli, who got behind the defense, eluded Trapp and tapped the ball into an empty net for the win.

The Hens were not so fortunate on Friday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium, falling 3-2 to Virginia Commonwealth University after taking an early 1-0 lead when Matt Laudeman found the net off an assist from Tadjalli. The second UD goal was scored by Tadjalli on a feed from Blau.

Following weekend action, UD is now 4-3-2 overall and 2-2 in the CAA. The Hens will take to the road for a pair of challenging conference contests, traveling to George Mason University for a match at 7 p.m., Friday, and to Towson University for a match at 1 p.m., Sunday. George Mason is 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference and Towson is 7-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference.
