Talk on advances in tissue engineering, drug delivery Oct. 9
11:57 a.m., Oct. 4, 2006--Robert Langer, a pioneer in drug delivery and tissue engineering, will be the guest speaker at a seminar on advances in drug delivery and tissue engineering set to take place at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 9, in 130 Smith Hall. Sponsored by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the seminar will explore the latest breakthroughs in drug delivery and tissue engineering and how their use is revolutionizing medical therapies. Langer, who is one of 13 Institute Professors (the highest honor awarded to a faculty member) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has written more than 880 articles in his area of expertise and has applied for nearly 550 patents in the field of medical technology, many of which have been licensed to pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and medical device companies. He served as a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Science Board, the FDA's highest advisory board, from 1995-2002 and has received more than 140 major awards over the course of his career, including the Charles Stark Draper Prize, the Gairdner Foundation International Award, the Dickinson Prize for Science, the John Fritz Award and the Lemelson-MIT prize--the world's largest monetary prize for invention. The one-hour seminar is free and open to the public, and an informal question-and-answer session will follow Langer's talk. The event is hosted by Xinqiao Jia, assistant professor of materials science. For more information, call (302) 831-6553. |
