Possible rape-burglary link is investigated

Newark Police sketch of a person of interest in the rape case

2:45 p.m., Oct. 13, 2006--In the wake of a rape early Sunday, Oct. 8, on Wilbur Street, Newark Police are investigating a second incident that occurred at 4:50 a.m. that same morning in the 200 block of East Park Place.

Police said that following publication of news about the rape, another woman came forward to report that on that morning an intruder entered her residence and awakened her as she lay in bed. The victim, a University of Delaware student, immediately screamed and demanded that the intruder leave, which he did after making a comment about being lost.

The victim alerted Newark Police about the incident on the afternoon of Oct. 9 after reading about the rape on Wilbur Street.

The Wilbur Street rape occurred at 5:30 a.m. A man described as approximately 20 years old with a slightly heavy build and short, buzz-cut hair, entered the residence of a 19-year-old woman while she was asleep and sexually assaulted her. After the assault, the suspect fled.

In the East Park Place incident, the suspect was described as a 19-21 year old, about 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall with broad shoulders. He had a fair complexion, light brown buzz-cut hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt.

Newark Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether or not the cases are linked. Given the similarities between the two incidents, suspect descriptions and times, police said they are considering the perpetrator of the East Park Place burglary a person of interest in the rape case.

Anyone with information should contact Det. Rieger of the Newark Police Department at (302) 366-7110, ext. 133, or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
