1:17 p.m., Oct. 25, 2006--UD again was one of the top 10 fundraising organizations during the American Heart Association's (AHA) annual Heart Walk held Sept. 10 on the Riverfront in Wilmington, according to figures released last week by the New Castle County AHA branch.

The final tally for the fundraiser put UD in sixth place out of 50 local businesses that participated in the walk. It was the largest walk in Delaware to date, with more than 4,000 participants raising more than $400,000 for education and research into heart disease, the nation's leading killer.

The University's team captains recruited 130 walkers who raised a total of $16,856, surpassing last year's total of $14,831.

"This year's 13 UD Heart Walk team captains did an outstanding job of recruiting walkers,” Marianne Carter, director of UD's Employee Wellness Center and walk co-coordinator, said. “The University added lots of enthusiasm to the event and had a very large presence there.”
She said YoUDee and the UD cheerleaders also were on hand to entertain participants.

“Seeing UD employees and students so dedicated to this worthy cause gives me a sense of pride and hope,” Richie Holland, manager of human resources and affirmative action and UD's Heart Walk co-coordinator, said. “Captains and their teams were wonderful to work with, and the University's support for this event is an excellent representation of what UD stands for.”

Carter, also a captain, collected $2,195 in donations, the highest amount raised by an individual at UD. "I lost a good friend, Lea McElrath, to a heart attack at age 41,” Carter said. “It feels good to raise money in her memory, especially since these funds will be used towards education and prevention. My hope is that continued advances will prevent her 1-year-old granddaughter, Taryn, from having to deal with heart disease as an adult,” she said.

Several student groups were involved this year. The Nutrition Club raised close to $800, Alpha Phi sorority collected $675 and Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority brought in $323.

The top five teams, named for their captains, raised the following amounts: Carter, $4,129; Marcia Rollison, Lerner College of Business and Economics, $2,623; Alice Daugherty, College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, $1,710; Randee Tobin, College of Health Sciences, $1,610; and Patricia Fogg, Facilities, $1,031.

“We were pleased with the results and to have UD continue as one of our top 10 companies,” Beverly Jackson, an American Heart Association representative, said. “It's exciting to see the students and faculty work together in an effort that supports the community. I've been doing the walk in Wilmington since 1997, and to see how it's grown is really satisfying.”
