Blue Hens top Hofstra for Homecoming win

UD’s Erik Johnson had 12 tackles and was involved in two sacks in the victory over Hofstra.

8:57 a.m., Oct. 16, 2006--The University of Delaware football team defeated Hofstra University 10-6 for a much-needed Homecoming victory on Saturday afternoon at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-3 overall as they prepare to travel to the University of Richmond for an Atlantic 10 Conference game at 6 p.m., Saturday. UD is 1-2 in conference play while Richmond is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

In the victory over Hofstra, the Hens scored on their opening drive and the defense, helped by the return of defensive lineman Manny Marshall and hard-hitting linebacker Brian Brown, throttled the Pride.

“This would have been really difficult not to have won this game after how hard we practiced all week,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler, who improved to 27-6 all-time at Delaware Stadium, said. “This was the best defense we played all year. We got some kids back (from injury) on defense this week and that made a huge difference. You could see how much better we played with those guys in there. We got a good pass rush and made less mistakes and that was huge.”

Linebacker Erik Johnson led the defense with 12 tackles and was in on two quarterback sacks. In all, the Hens sacked Hofstra quarterback Anton Clarkson five times.

UD quarterback Joe Flacco completed 20 of 29 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown, that to Robbie Agnone to cap the opening drive as the Hens marched 85 yards on 14 plays for the score.

Tight end Ben Patrick led the Hens with eight catches for 72 yards while Kervin Michaud, filling in for injured running back Omar Cuff, had 15 carries for 58 yards and caught two passes for 20 yards. Jon Heydt had five catches for 40 yards and Agnone had a pair of catches for 24 yards.

Hofstra scored on a pair of field goals to cut the early 7-0 lead to 7-6 before UD responded with a 22-yard field goal by Zach Hobby with 24 seconds left in the first half. The 10-6 halftime score held up as neither team scored in the second half.
