Northeastern scores late to topple Hens

Wide receiver Kervin Michaud was pressed into duty as a running back in UD’s 27-24 loss to Northeastern. He ran seven times for 48 yards, and also caught six passes for 43 yards.

8:14 a.m., Oct. 9, 2006--Northeastern University kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the University of Delaware 27-24 in an Atlantic 10 Conference football game played Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field in Brookline, Mass.

The stadium has not been kind to the Fightin' Blue Hens, who have now lost three consecutive games there and who fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

UD, which gave up a number of turnovers and big plays, overcame an early 10-0 deficit to take a 17-10 lead into halftime. After falling behind once again in the second half, the Hens tied the game 24-24 on a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco to tight end Ben Patrick. The game appeared to be headed into overtime when a late Northeastern drive ended with the winning field goal.

“We just made too many mental mistakes today,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler, whose team learned shortly before the game that star running back Omar Cuff would be unable to play because of an ankle injury. Cuff joined a long list of injured players.

“We put a lot on some young guys, a lot like Northeastern does, and it was pretty obvious,” Keeler said. “We found ways to give the game back and Northeastern found a way to win it. We just have to stay together as a team and understand why we lost. We just have to find a way to eliminate mental mistakes.”

Flacco finished the game with 24 completions in 41 attempts for 242 yards and the one touchdown strike to Patrick. Kervin Michaud, who was pressed into duty as a running back, was UD's leading rusher with seven carries for 48 yards. He also caught six passes for 43 yards, while Mark Duncan had seven catches for 78 yards. Freshman running back Jared Bradley scored two touchdowns.

UD will return to action for the annual Homecoming game, which will be played against Hofstra University at noon, Saturday, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium. Former UD defensive coordinator Dave Cohen coaches Hofstra, which is 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
