Towson wins shootout at Delaware Stadium

UD’s Aaron Love caught 12 passes in the loss to Towson.

10:25 a.m., Oct. 30, 2006--Towson University won a battle of high-powered offenses, amassing 627 total yards and defeating the University of Delaware 49-35 in an Atlantic 10 Conference game played Saturday afternoon at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

Just as he did last year in a 35-31 victory over the Fightin' Blue Hens, Towson quarterback Sean Schaefer had a field day, completing 27 of 37 passes for 435 yards and five touchdown passes. The 435 yards was the fourth highest total ever against a UD defense.

“We threw everything at them,” said UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. “It's difficult to match a team that is playing that well offensively. We just couldn't generate a pass rush against a team with a tremendous quarterback and great skill players. We couldn't afford to let them throw the ball around but we did. We made some mistakes we hadn't made the last two weeks and that was frustrating. You just can't ask your offense to score every time they get the ball but that's what we had to do.”

The UD offense did score its fair share, gaining 454 total yards of offense as quarterback Joe Flacco hit on 32 of a school record 51 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Aaron Love caught 12 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown and senior tight end Ben Patrick caught seven balls for 74 yards and a score.

With the loss, UD fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10. The Hens now must travel to James Madison University for a game against a team that is 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Dukes are coming off a 27-10 victory over the University of Richmond.
