B&E alums Lavelle, Tenev honored for excellence 5:26 p.m., Oct. 17, 2006--Gregory F. Lavelle, managing director of Puglisi & Associates in Newark, and Stoyan Tenev, lead economist for the East Asia and Pacific Region of The World Bank Group's International Finance Corporation (IFC), received Alumni Awards of Excellence on Oct. 13 in the Chaplin Tyler Atrium at Alfred Lerner Hall. Conrado (Bobby) M. Gempesaw, dean of the Lerner College of Business and Economics, said Lavelle and Tenev were examples to the university. “Today is a very happy day, one which we should all celebrate,” Gempesaw said. “Each year we present the Alumni Award of Excellence of the Lerner College in recognition of professional accomplishments, commitment and excellence and contribution to the community. This is a very special award.” Kenneth C. Jones of the Lerner College Alumni Association presented the awards. Gregory F. Lavelle Lavelle has been with Puglisi & Associates since 1987. His major Lavelle graduated from UD in 1987 with a bachelor of science in business administration with concentrations in both finance and marketing. He also earned his master of governmental administration in 1995 from the University of Pennsylvania and his certified cash manager designation from the Treasury Management Association. Lavelle said he was impressed with the improvements at the University since his graduation. “The campus at the University of Delaware is beautiful, it on the rise since I left in 1987,” Lavelle said. “The academics are on par with the best universities in the world.” Stoyan Tenev Tenev is responsible for strategy development, economic analysis, and technical assistance in East Asia and the Pacific. He also participated in the design and implementation of IFC's strategic response to the Asian financial crisis, which led to a sharp increase in IFC's program and cumulative investments of over $2 billion in Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines. He is a member of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and has been involved in the Bulgarian Community Center in Washington, D.C. He also was recently part of the Business Students Association Conference on transition economies. Tenev graduated from UD in 1993 with a master's degree in economics. He also has a bachelor of science from Varna University of Economics in Bulgaria, and earned his doctorate in economics in 1998 from the University of Maryland. He is fluent in Bulgarian, French, Russian and English. Tenev, who came to the University from Bulgaria, said his arrival at the University meant much more than an education. “To me, this is a special occasion to say 'Thank you' for all the opportunities you've given me,” Tenev said. “It really was a life-changing event.” Article by Julia Parmley, AS '07 |
