Cross country teams win Delaware Invitational

UD’s Julia Somers won the individual championship at the weekend’s Delaware Invitational meet.

9:03 a.m., Oct. 16, 2006--The University of Delaware cross country squads captured team championships at the season's second Delaware Invitational meet held Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.

The UD women's team captured its third title of the season as sophomore Julia Somers captured the individual championship, covering the five-kilometer course in a time of 18:26.27, nearly seven seconds faster than the runner-up Abby Pullen of Hofstra University.

The UD men's team also captured its third team title as the Hens placed three runners in the top 10, with Gregg Cantwell crossing the line in fifth place for the best finish among the Fightin' Blue Hens.

In the women's race, Somers won her first career individual title and led the Hens for the third straight meet. UD scored 62 points to capture the title in the 16-team field. American was second with 71 points, followed by Towson, Hofstra, Northeastern, Millersville, West Chester, Howard, Morgan State, George Mason, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Temple, Lincoln, Coppin State and Goldey-Beacom.

Also for the Hens, freshman Christina Antonopoulos finished 10th in a time of 19:04.02, Brooke Maguire 15th in 19:29.09, Liz Paul 17th in 19:34.94 and Ioanna Antonopoulos 19th in 19:51.49.

In the men's race, UD scored 64 points to outdistance runner-up American in the 14-team field. Hofstra was third, followed by West Chester, Temple, Millersville, Northeastern, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Coppin State, Howard, Lincoln, Goldey-Beacom and Morgan State. Maryland-Eastern Shore's Alfred Singoei was the individual winner as he covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:17.19, nine seconds better than runner-up Anthony Littlejohn of Coppin State.

For UD, Cantwell covered the course in 26:37.77. Also for the Hens, Tyler Mayforth finished ninth in 26:58.87, Nick Pyle 10th in 27:00.72 and Kevin Kemmerle 17th in 27:19.38.

Both Delaware teams will take next week off in preparation for the Colonial Athletic Association championship meet, which the Hens will host Oct. 27 at White Clay Creek State Park.
