CAA basketball polls have Hens third, last

UD senior guard Tyresa Smith has been named preseason All-CAA.

1:26 p.m., Oct. 25, 2006--The University of Delaware women's basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association this season, while the men's team has been picked to finish in last place. The selections were determined by a vote of the conference's coaches and sports information directors and by journalists who cover the CAA, and were announced Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

In women's basketball, perennial power Old Dominion University was picked to finish first, followed by James Madison University, the Fightin' Blue Hens, Hofstra University, the College of William & Mary, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason University, Drexel University, Georgia State University, Towson University and Northeastern University.

UD Head Coach Tina Martin's team went 22-8 and earned a WNIT berth last season, and returns CAA defensive player of the year and preseason All-CAA selection Tyresa Smith, a senior guard, as well as point guard Alena Koshansky, forward Chrissy Fisher and Melissa Czorniewy. The Hens also add transfer players Kyle DeHaven and Jamie Mundy, both guards, and Kristina Gineitis, a forward.

UD will be the host team for the 2006-07 CAA women's basketball championship tournament, to be played March 8-11 at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Hofstra University was picked to win the conference championship in men's basketball and was followed in the voting by 2006 NCAA Final Four participant George Mason, Drexel, Old Dominion, UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, Towson, Georgia State, Northeastern, James Madison, William & Mary and UD.

New UD Head Coach Monté Ross leads the men's team, which is coming off a 9-21 season. Ross joins UD following a long and successful career as an assistant to Phil Martelli at St. Joseph's University.

Returning Hens include sophomore guard Zaire Taylor, who was named to the 2006 CAA All-Rookie team, senior guards Calvin Cannon and Chris Prothro, forwards Herb Courtney and Henry Olawoye and centers Matt Hewson and Raphael Madera. Joining the team are freshmen guards Brian Johnson and Darrell Johnson.

The women's team will open at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 12, against Villanova University at The Bob. The men's team will open at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, against Marist College, also at The Bob.
