Blue Hen baseball team plans Blue-Gold series

2:56 p.m., Oct. 4, 2006--The University of Delaware baseball team will conclude fall practice with a three-game Blue-Gold series beginning Thursday at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Fightin' Blue Hens roster will be divided into a Blue team and a Gold team and will play three nine-inning games. The first game will be at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, the second game at 11 a.m., Sunday, and the third game at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11.

In first game of the fall series, pitcher Chad Kerfoot will start for the Blue team and Billy Harris will take the mound for the Gold. Sunday's starters will be Todd Ozog for the Blue and Matt Heppner for the Gold. Wednesday's starters are to be determined.

In addition to Kerfoot and Ozog, the Blue roster will include Ryan Bottegal, Kevin Brown, Mike Clifford, Chris DiLullo, Bryan Hagerich, Brandon Menchaca, Todd Menchaca, Bill Merkler, Steve Miklas, Brad Miller, Lee Reed, Dan Richardson and Joe Tebaldi. Last season, Brandon Menchaca was named third-team All-America after hitting .395 with 16 homers and 64 runs batted in.

In addition to Harris and Heppner, the Gold will include Evan Bowen, Alex Buchholz, Ryan Cuneo, Kyle Davis, Ryan Engelhardt, Joe Kieba, Ryan Nanni, Danny Overcash, Ryan Reed, Brian Rorick, Scott Shockley, David Slovak and Adam Tsakonas. Buchholz was named the Colonial Athletic Association rookie of the year in 2006, hitting .378 with 18 home runs and 64 runs batted in.

Not participating in the series are Brent Gaphardt, Mitch Heckert, Mike McGuire, Steve Spiese and Steve Ulaky.

In 2006, UD went 30-24 and led NCAA Division I in home runs per game (2.06), doubles per game (2.65) and slugging percentage (.574). The Hens also finished eighth in the nation in scoring at 8.6 runs per game.

The Hens will open the 2007 season with a three-game series at the University of Richmond on Feb. 23-25.
