Student-led rock band in national competition

5:23 p.m., Oct. 10, 2006--Stealing December, a Newark-based rock band whose lead singer is UD music education major Brandon Langer, is one of 10 national finalists in the 2006 Zippo Hot Tour competition.

Langer, who also plays guitar with the band, is a junior who sings with the UD Chorale and is a Blue Hen Ambassador. He said if the band wins it could mean a record contract.

“It started out as a dream and now we're one step away from touring, getting $100,000 worth of equipment and auditioning for Geffen,” Langer said. “We're hoping everyone at UD and in Delaware will support us.”

The Zippo tour is the largest unsigned band contest in the U.S., with more than 1,000 bands from 10 major cities competing. Stealing December won in the Philadelphia region.

The band that wins goes on a 20-date national tour with platinum recording artists Papa Roach, gets thousands of dollars worth of gear and is given an audition for Geffen Records.

The winner of the contest is determined solely by online voting that ends Sunday, Oct. 15. To vote for Stealing December, visit [www.zippohottour.com/main.aspx]. Those who want to vote will be required to provide their birth dates and e-mail addresses.

The band's publicist, Chuck Ristano, who graduated from UD in 2005 as an English major, said Langer's friends and classmates have been helping him promote the band and get the word out about the contest. “The people at UD have been fantastic. This contest is a great opportunity for people across the country to get to know the band. The exposure has been tremendous,” he said.
