’Street Life Project’ topic of Oct. 16 BAMS talk 4 p.m., Oct. 11, 2006--Yasser Arafat Payne, UD assistant professor of Black American Studies, will lecture on “The Street Life Project: How Street Life Oriented Black Men Frame Notions of Resiliency” at the second Black American Studies brown-bag lecture of the fall semester, set for 12:15-1:10 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, in 206 Trabant University Center. Payne, who recently joined UD's faculty, will chronicle the stories of four black men who were actively involved in the culture of urban street life. He will trace how the men were organized in a Participatory Action Research (PAR) design to determine how they developed coping strategies when faced with severe economic and educational disadvantages. In his talk, Payne also will examine the PAR model and its effects on the sample group as they grew older. He will discuss findings that suggest that the men in the group became more, rather than less, negative about their economic and educational prospects as they aged, and he will look at how this might be influenced by established street-life dynamics. The lecture is free and open to the public, and participants are encouraged to bring and eat their lunches during the talk. For more information on this event, call (302) 831-2897. |
