UD students assaulted early Sunday morning 8:30 a.m., Oct. 10, 2006--Newark Police are investigating two cases of assault and robbery involving three University of Delaware students that occurred about the same time early in the morning of Sunday, Oct. 8. In the first incident, which happened at 2:10 a.m., an 18-year-old UD student was beaten and suffered facial injuries after leaving a party at an apartment in the Ivy Hall Apartments on Wollaston Avenue, police said. Police said the victim was leaving a gathering when he encountered a group that had been thrown out of another party and was not happy about it. The student was assaulted and the next thing he remembered was several blocks away and suffering a facial contusion, police said. He also was missing a cell phone and other property. The victim was treated and released at the Christiana Medical Center. Newark Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact Det. Jay Conover at (302) 366-7110, ext. 132. In the second incident, also at 2:10 a.m., two UD students, one 18 and one 19, were in the Newark Shopping Center when they encountered a group of males. One in the group used a racial slur, after which an argument ensued and one of the UD students was punched in the back of the head and knocked to the ground, where he sustained facial injuries. The second UD student went to the aid of his friend and also was punched. Both victims had property stolen from them during the fight. One victim was treated for a broken jaw and other facial injuries at the Christiana Medical Center. Police said one of the attackers was about 18-20 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build and black hair, and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and two earrings. The suspects were driving a teal-colored VW Passat GLX and a blue and primer-colored, two-tone Honda Civic. Newark Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Det. Kevin Feeney at (302) 366-7110, ext. 139, or to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333. Members of the University community are reminded to always be alert, to be aware of their surroundings and, when concerned about traveling at night, to contact UD Public Safety for the safety escort service by calling (302) 831-6666.
