January workshop on managing student writing

3:11 p.m., Nov. 10, 2006--Registration is open now through Dec. 1 for “Managing Student Writing In Your Course,” an interactive Winter Session workshop for faculty. Being offered from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Jan. 16-18 at the UD Writing Center, participants who complete the workshop will be awarded $500 in professional development funds.

Melissa Ianetta, director of writing at UD, and Dee Baer, consultant for writing in the disciplines at UD, will facilitate. Each day's session will include mini-presentations, discussions and time to work on individual syllabi and writing assignments.

By the end of the workshop participants should be better able to:

  • Use student writing to assess critical thinking skills;
  • Revise and sequence existing assignments;
  • Provide students with a range of quick writing-to-learn activities;
  • Implement efficient writing conference techniques and effective peer-review strategies;
  • Identify “the least you should know” about grammar;
  • Reconsider and reconceptualize term papers;
  • Employ technology to support student writing; and
  • Save time with strategies for responding to student writing and managing the paper load.

Space is limited to 10 participants with preference given to faculty teaching second writing courses. Participants will receive copies of John Bean's Engaging Ideas: The Professor's Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom and Effective Grading: A Tool for Learning and Assessment by Barbara Walvoord and Virginia Anderson. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

To register, contact Carolyn Clark at [cclark@udel.edu] or call (302) 831-1890. For more information, e-mail Ianetta at [ianetta@udel.edu] or Baer at [dbaer@udel.edu].

The workshop is supported by a 2006-07 University of Delaware Center for Teaching Effectiveness/General Education/IT-User Services Instructional Grant.
