Blue Hen Weekend: Basketball, swimming set

4 p.m., Nov. 16, 2006--The basketball season is under way, and this weekend the University of Delaware women's team will play a home game against American University at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are 1-1, opening the season with a 68-63 victory over Villanova University before falling 68-60 on the road at Boston College. In the first game, senior guard Tyresa Smith scored 27 points and had 11 rebounds to be named the Colonial Athletic Association player of the week. While Boston College held Smith in check, UD senior forward Chrissy Fisher scored 26 points, draining four three-point baskets, and had 14 rebounds.

American University is 1-1, with a victory over Fordham University and a loss to Longwood University. The Eagles' roster includes guard Liz Hayes, who transferred from UD. The women's basketball game can be heard on radio stations WWTX-AM The Ticket 1290 and WVUD-FM 91.3.

Also at home this weekend will be the UD swimming and diving teams, which will compete in a dual meet against LaSalle University beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building. The Hens are off to a strong start, with the women's team 6-1 and the men's team 4-1.

The UD football team will be at home, facing archrival Villanova University at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

Delaware's volleyball team will be in action in the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals, facing Northeastern University at 5 p.m., Friday, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. The Hens are 20-8 and feature junior hitter Colleen Walsh, who is ranked 29th in NCAA Division I with 4.61 kills per game, and junior setter Megan Welch, who is 15th with 13.24 assists per game. Walsh is the reigning CAA player of the week.

The Hens have defeated Northeastern twice this season, 3-1 and 3-2. If UD wins, the Hens will continue play in the semifinals on Saturday. The championship game will be played Sunday, also at Hofstra. Live stats will be available on the UD athletics web site [www.udel.edu/sportsinfo].

The men's basketball team will be on the road Friday for a game at 7 p.m. against the State University of New York at Albany. The Hens opened the season with a 78-62 loss to Marist College on Tuesday. In that game, UD got strong play from forward Herb Courtney, who finished with 27 points, and guards Brian Johnson and Darrell Johnson. The game can be heard on radio station WRDX-FM The River 94.7.

The team will return home for a game at 7 p.m., Tuesday, against Rider University.

Also this weekend, the UD cross country teams will close the season at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America (IC4A) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships to be held Saturday at Van Cortlandt State Park in New York City.
