UD women's basketball defeats Penn, 73-49

Senior guard Tyresa Smith scored 20 points in UD’s victory over Penn.

12:14 p.m., Nov. 30, 2006--The University of Delaware women's basketball team cruised to a 73-49 victory over the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday night at the Palestra in Philadelphia.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who earned votes in both the Associated Press and the USA Today/ESPN polls this week, won their fourth straight game and improved to 5-1 on the season.

Senior guard Tyresa Smith led UD with 20 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Chrissy Fisher had 15 points and seven rebounds and junior guard Melissa Czorniewy had 11 points. The Hens took advantage of 25 Penn turnovers, with junior guard Kyle DeHaven getting seven steals.

“We set the tone early and kept it throughout the game and picked up a big win on the road,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “Tyresa was Tyresa tonight and was outstanding. She read the defense well and had a lot of opportunities to drive the lane and she took advantage.”

The Hens will open Colonial Athletic Association play with a game at 1 p.m., Sunday, at Drexel University. They will travel to Philadelphia again on Tuesday for a game at LaSalle University, with tip-off at 7 p.m. Drexel is 2-4 but has won its last two games, defeating Lehigh University and Siena College. LaSalle has opened the season 6-0, including a 73-63 victory over Penn. The games will be carried on WWTX-AM The Ticket 1290 and WDOV-AM 1410.

UD will return home for a game against Boston University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
