UD women’s basketball tops Villanova in opener

Tyresa Smith had 27 points and 11 rebounds in UD’s victory over Villanova.

1:17 p.m., Nov. 13, 2006--The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with a 68-63 victory over Villanova University of the Big East Conference on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens fell behind early and trailed 36-27 at halftime before taking control about midway through the second half. Senior guard Tyresa Smith led the Hens, scoring 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while junior forward Courtney Irving added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior forward Chrissy Fisher added eight points and nine rebounds for the Hens, who held a commanding 47-29 advantage on the boards, while first-year transfer Kyle DeHaven dished out a game-high seven assists and scored eight points in her UD debut.

UD, which has a challenging early season schedule, will return to action with a game at Boston College of the Atlantic Coast Conference at 7 p.m., Tuesday. The Hens will return home to face American University at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at The Bob.
