Hofstra edges Delaware in CAA volleyball semis

UD’s Colleen Walsh had 26 kills in the hard-fought loss to Hofstra in the CAA tournament semifinal match.

11:18 a.m., Nov. 20, 2006--Hofstra University, which went on to win the Colonial Athletic Association championship, edged the University of Delaware 3-2 in the conference tournament semifinal match played Saturday afternoon on the Hofstra campus in Hempstead, N.Y. Hofstra defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 3-0 on Sunday for the title.

The Fightin' Blue Hens took Hofstra to the brink in Saturday's match, with Hofstra winning the first game 30-27 and UD taking the second 30-28. Hofstra took the third game 30-25 but the Hens fought back to win the fourth 30-26 and fourth a deciding game. Hofstra won that 15-11.

“I'm really proud of our team and our effort, and our will to win was excellent,” UD Head Coach Bonnie Kenny, whose team finished 21-9, said. “On a whole you can't ask for a better season. They represented the University in a first-class manner.”

Leading the Hens in the match against Hofstra were junior Colleen Walsh, who had 26 kills, and sophomore Kelly Gibson, who had 25 kills and 24 digs. Junior setter Megan Welch had 67 assists and 18 digs, while freshman Kelly Matthias had 13 kills and four blocks and fellow freshman Michelle LaLonde had nine kills and five blocks. Senior Heather Ranck had 22 digs in her final match for the Hens.

UD reached the semifinals with a 3-0 victory over Northeastern University on Friday, taking the games 30-19, 30-19 and 30-24. Gibson had 16 kills and six digs, Walsh had 12 kills, LaLonde had 12 kills and Matthias had 10 kills and four blocks. Ranck had 19 digs, Welch had 48 assists and senior Claire McCormack had four service aces.
