UD volleyball team wins matches, eyes tourney

Colleen Walsh had 32 kills, the second highest total in UD history, in the Hens’ 3-2 victory over William & Mary.

1:07 p.m., Nov. 13, 2006--The University of Delaware volleyball team closed the regular season with a pair of victories, running its record to 20-8, and now prepares for the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament.

The Hens, who finished 11-7 in conference, play will enter the conference tournament as the fifth seed and will meet fourth seed Northeastern University at 5 p.m., Friday, at Hofstra University. Hofstra enters as the top seed and will serve as host of the CAA tournament.

Playing its final two regular season matches at home at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building, the Fightin' Blue Hens edged the College of William & Mary 3-2 on Friday and defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 3-1 on Saturday.

Against William & Mary, UD jumped out to a 2-0 lead, winning 30-26 and 31-29. The Tribe rallied, winning the next two games 30-28 and 30-22, and forcing a fifth and deciding game. UD was match point down in the fifth game, trailing 14-13, but junior Colleen Walsh posted consecutive kills to put the Hens up 15-14. With the game then tied 16-16, freshman Kelly Matthias got a kill and junior setter Megan Welch followed with a service ace for an 18-16 victory.

In the match, Walsh had a total of 32 kills, the second most in school history. Also for the Hens, sophomore Kelly Gibson had 22 kills and 18 digs and Welch had 69 assists and three service aces. Senior Heather Ranck had 22 digs and freshman Michelle LaLonde had five blocks.

Against Virginia Commonwealth, the Hens won 30-19, 33-31, 36-38 and 30-19. Walsh had 27 kills and Gibson had 13 kills and 21 digs. Welch had 62 assists, good for fifth all-time at UD with 2,424 career assists. Senior Claire McCormack recorded 17 digs, including the 1,000th of her career, and Ranck had 21.

The victory gave the Hens 20 victories for the season, the first time the team has accomplished that feat since 1997.
